Digital publishing, as a strategic emerging industry in the news publishing industry, is recognized as the development direction of the publishing industry in the 21st century and has shown great vitality in recent years.

From 2006 to 2010, the total output of China's digital publishing industry increased from 21.3 billion yuan to 105.1 billion yuan, an average annual increase of nearly 50%. The three outputs of mobile publishing, online game publishing and Internet advertising accounted for more than 90% of the total output of digital publishing. In 2010, digital publishing accounted for 8.3% of the total output of the news and publishing industry, and is expected to reach a 25% weight in 2015.

During the “Eleventh Five-Year Plan” period, the product forms of digital publishing in China basically appeared, including e-books, digital newspapers, digital journals, online original literature, online education publications, online maps, digital music, online animation, online games, and database publishing. By the end of the "Twelfth Five-Year Plan" period, China's digital publishing has formed 8-10 national digital publishing bases with annual output value of over 10 billion or national digital publishing industry parks, and built 5-8 books, magazines and audio-visual electronics. The publication's massive digital content delivery platform has formed 20 internationally competitive digital publishing backbone enterprises with annual revenues of more than 1 billion yuan.

The new Chinese national reading survey shows that in 2011, the comprehensive reading rate of Chinese media aged 18-70 years was 77.6%, an increase of 0.5% over 2010; the book reading rate was 53.7%, an increase of 1.6% over 2010; The contact rate of reading methods increased by 5.8% compared with 2010.
