British company for key components of 3D printing for unmanned surface ships

Currently, the UK is looking for further ocean monitoring methods to get more accurate weather forecasts in the future. To this end, MOST Autonomous Vessels (AV), the world's leading UK unmanned ship manufacturer, hired Ogle Models to help implement part of its super-sea unmanned vessel project. Headquartered in Hertfordshire, England, Ogle was asked to print prototype parts for a remote unmanned ship called AutoNaut that can be used at sea. This will open up a whole new field of research compared to traditional marine mapping and marine biology research.

Ogle's mission is to design a complex bow and stern for AutoNaut. Marine unmanned vessels, also known as unmanned surface vessels or USVs, require absolute precision in their manufacture. Ogle uses laser sintering (SLS), one of the most accurate 3D printing techniques , which uses a laser to trace a 3D model on a powder bed, melting the materials and bonding them together to form a solid solid shape.

After the 3D printing was completed, the parts manufactured by the Ogle team were rigorously tested, because the surface of the bow and stern was not only absolutely accurate, but also capable of coping with various marine conditions.

“Materials and production processes also need to ensure that the end-use parts are non-porous and impervious, so as to ensure the accuracy of Autonaut model testing,” the Ogle team said at a recent press conference.

Previously, Ogle had also worked with MOST AV on other projects, but according to Dan Alldis, MOST's design manager, the Autonaut project is the largest one they have ever worked with. For the Autonaut project, Ogle's price is very competitive, and the lineup of Ogle machines and tools is also deeply impressed by MOST AV.

Autonaut has been launched, and unmanned ships like Autonaut will undoubtedly change many of the traditional methods of collecting data in many fields, including meteorology.

Carrying the sensors of the Meteorological Agency, AutoNaut has just completed a four-day trial from Plymouth, England. So far, it has been successful, confirming the feasibility of the idea of obtaining weather forecast data through unmanned ships, and it also proves that this approach can simplify the process of data collection and reduce its cost. In addition, in further development, the use of 3D printed parts and prototypes makes it easier for developers to modify designs as required.

With the massive manufacture and use of unmanned survey vessels, they will provide an “invaluable resource” for countless industries. They will perform numerous data collection tasks around the world that were previously impossible to accomplish. Therefore, the Ogle team believes that the future of the unmanned ship is bright.
