The application of 3D printing is more and more extensive, ranging from food in life, wear, to medical organs, medical equipment, and even 3D pistols and airplanes. Today, 3D printing is also beginning to enter the US Air Force field. The US Air Force first approved the use of 3D printing components for the E-3 early warning aircraft in January this year.
America Makes, also known as the National Institute of Additive Manufacturing Innovation, is a national promotion agency for 3D printing innovation in the United States. Not long ago, at an event at Youngstown State University (YSU), it announced that it will allocate $8 million to the University of Dayton Research Institute (UDRI), which will be funded by the University of Dayton Institute and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). A 3D printing solution for the development and maintenance of aircraft.
The goal of the University of Dayton Institute is to develop a sophisticated 3D printing process for aircraft maintenance. America Makes will provide $8 million to the University of Dayton Research Institute, and the US Air Force Research Laboratory will provide $2.87 million in matching funds. The University of Dayton will receive a total of $10.87 million in funding.
Rob Gorham, Director of Operations at America Makes, said: "This project is important in all aspects. This is the first funding project after we signed a new five-year cooperation agreement with AFRL. It is also an important research. The field is not only for the Air Force, but for the entire military, manufacturing, and society."
Maintenance has always been the most difficult problem for the aerospace industry. Therefore, the US Air Force hopes to enhance the application of 3D printing technology in development, demonstration, maintenance and repair through this project.
If the research is successful, it will solve a big problem in this field, and the annual aerospace repair and maintenance can save a lot of money.
