Peace theme 3D printed shoes in the international 3D printing competition

Recently, five graduate students at the University of Buffalo designed a 3D printed custom shoe and used it to call for world peace. The shoe won the first place in the 2016 International 3D Printing Competition organized by the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing at Nanyang Technological University, with a prize of US$10,000. The competition requires participants to use 3D printing technology to create functional or functional shoes.

To this end, the five students who participated in the competition decided to design and create a customized shoe as an artistic appeal to world peace. Named "Peace", the shoe is the intersection of art, technology and fashion, and is fully presented in a forward-thinking way. The shoe has a map of the world map and a dove, which represents the students' appeal to world peace and is very artistic.

With 3D printing technology and high-tech materials, “Peace” not only conveys information about world peace, but also provides maximum comfort. The student team uses data from the smart insoles to locate the exact pressure points and then optimize comfort for the user. The insole of the shoe has a customized profile and an accurate profile that is manufactured with expert supervision while consulting a large number of human factors. The introduction of the Slide & Clamp mechanism makes the shoe both stable and comfortable. It is a two-in-one combination shoe that can be used for both sandals and ordinary shoes.

The student team also leveraged Stratasys' patented technology, the PolyJet system, which cures photosensitive resins with UV light. The shoe is highly advanced with a combination of flexible and rigid materials. The interior is soft and supportive, while the outer body is strong and wear resistant. Currently, models of 3D printed shoes use high-end materials compatible with the PolyJet system, including Tango Black Plus, Vero White and Tango Plus.

The five graduate students are Dhruvay Jain, Priyanka Nikam, Hardik Gandhi, Anshika Chourdhary and Weihao Quall. Team instructors include Chi Zhou, Lora Cavuoto, faculty member of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering (ISE), and Wenyao Xu, a faculty member of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Feng Lin, a CSE research scientist.
