BASF has now developed a new biodegradable plastic Ecovio. The new plastic combines BASF's petrochemical-based biodegradable plastic Ecoflex polymer with corn-based bioplastic polylactic acid from NatureWorks, the world's largest manufacturer of corn plastic (polylactic acid). BASF expects the demand for biodegradable plastics to increase by more than 20% over the next five years.
The first EcovioLBX8145 grade plastic contains 45% polylactic acid, BASF said it will be used to produce curved film for shopping bags. In Europe, Ecovio samples will be launched in the near future, and commercial volume products are expected to be launched in March next year. The company plans to introduce the new plastic to the Asian and North American markets in the second half of next year. (Tong Quansheng)
