People's longing for interstellar travel can be seen from a large number of Mars-themed design concepts, whether it is to go to IKEA for Mars design furniture or Foster + Partners, a famous design firm that dreams of Mars habitat for NASA. One question: What happens when people move to Mars?
Inspired by the architectural design of the Golden Boy, Ma Yansong will also inspire a series of furniture called “MAD Martin†at Design Miami in Basel, Switzerland.
This was his first set of furniture, which was jointly released by MAD Architects and Gallery ALL, and he spent two years researching and designing.
“Sometimes I think that Ma Yansong can talk to aliens. His architectural works have some degree of pioneeringness, as if to bring people into another world. I challenge him – for Mars. The people on the design of the living space," said Wang Yu, co-founder of Gallery ALL.
Ma Yansong once mentioned that he is a sci-fi enthusiast. The furniture he designed conveys the futuristic sense with a simple arc and a highly reflective glossy metal. The poster design is also popular in the popular science fiction style of the 20th century.
The collection consists of 5 pieces of furniture: a dining table, a lounge chair, a candlestick, a chandelier and a side table.
Similar to Ma Yansong's past works with imaginative colors, the consistent feature of these works is to replace the right angle with smooth lines. The shape of the furniture is mostly based on mountains, plants and rain. They surround the design concept of Ma Yansong's “Shanshui City†project, combining Chinese landscape design with the characteristics of contemporary urban architecture.
"I have never been to Mars... What do we find on Mars?" Ma Yansong said of his source of inspiration, "red soil, quiet horizon, or glacier mountains and rivers? Mars may be like thousands of years ago. Like the earth, all of this has its own unique beauty. I hope to bring the scenery of the earth that I imagined in my mind to Mars."

You can find some familiar shadows in his work, Zaha Hadid. That's right, the latter is a mentor when Ma Yansong studied architecture at Yale University.
People always mention his work experience at Zaha Hadid, comparing the design style that he and Zaha have abandoned at right angles, and the many difficult drawings of the two designers.
After he designed the twisted "Monroe Building" for Mississauga, Canada, the situation improved. After his "pioneering" was affirmed in North America, the project back to China became easier.
He successively won the museum's architectural project in Erdos, built the landmark Harbin Grand Theatre in Harbin, built an office building in Xiamen, and completed the rockery residence in the Guangxi Beihai.
After the "freakish" building was banned, although Ma Yansong was interviewed by The New York Times, he believed that this policy would not hinder innovation and criticized the domestic buildings that looked like the White House or the bottle. But his architectural style is likely to conflict with this policy.
There may be fewer restrictions on furniture, and it is much easier than building a house. They can be used to express Ma Yansong's philosophy, and there is no need to persuade Party A who has the money to accept these "alien" programs.
