In recent years, biodegradable plastics have become the main subject of scientific research in various countries as the countries around the world are increasingly concerned about environmental protection. According to reports, the research and development of biodegradable plastic packaging materials of European and American companies have developed rapidly, and have enriched the green packaging market.
Recently, Cargill Dow of the United States developed polylactic acid biodegradable plastic under the trade name "NatureWorks". At the end of last year, the company was able to build an annual capacity of 140 tons, becoming the world's largest biodegradable plastic industrial production company. Bio-degradable plastics produced by FrathsheU Co., Ltd. are raw materials for starch, regenerated cellulose, biodegradable polymers, etc. McDonal is set to sell automotive containers in the United States. Dupoont produces polyester biodegradable plastics under the trade name "Biomax". Frathshell and McDonal are planning to use Biomax as a surface coating for containers and are currently working together. Enrironmental Product has developed PVA water-soluble degradable plastics with a production capacity of 100 tons/year and is developing packaging materials for films, injection moldings, and compost bags. Australian Constatial Company develops starch/low molecular weight PVA biodegradable plastics and is currently in an intermediate trial.
Noramont, Italy, produces starch-based biodegradable plastics under the trade name “Mater Biâ€. Its capacity was 20 tons per year in 2003. Its main uses are packaging materials, compost bags, sanitary products, disposable tableware, and agricultural mulch. 120 tons in 2004.
Not long ago, at the biodegradable plastics exhibition held in the United Kingdom, some production companies applied for requirements on the formulation of packaging materials and agricultural film-related guidelines and tax incentives. In the future, the source of raw materials for biodegradable plastics will shift from petrochemical synthesis to renewable natural resources.
The copolyester biodegradable plastic (adipic acid/butylene glycol/terephthalic acid) produced by BASF, Germany, under the trade name “Ecoflexâ€, is continuously expanding its production capacity. Eastman produces copolyester biodegradable plastics. The trade name "Faster-Bio" is used for Roquett's starch-based food trays, and its products are being developed in the German market.
