SpeX, a new cheap and excellent 3D printing glasses, has just launched a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to find supporters. The new brand was founded by engineering graduate Chris Nieves, who wanted to offer consumers interesting, colorful and even modular glasses.
According to Nieves, he broke his expensive glasses and found that there was not enough money to replace it. Fortunately, the newly graduated student was able to use a 3D printer and was familiar with 3D design software, so he created a new pair of glasses for himself. After realizing that he was not the only one who was frustrated and had no money to change after smashing his glasses, he decided to turn this idea into a commercial project.
He explained, "The birth of SpeX was out of necessity. After I woke up in the morning, when I was groping the glasses on the bedside table, I heard a broken sound. My only pair of glasses fell on the ground and was made I can't use it. I just graduated from the mechanical engineering department and still looking for a job, so there is no extra cash. It is impossible to buy a new pair of glasses, so I have to be innovative. At this time I realized that I have engineering skills. And I can use a 3D printer. Why didn't I make it myself? Then I started working and designed the first prototype of SpeX."
After extensive research into the structure and construction of the glasses, Nieves developed an original, durable custom design for his SpeX. Perhaps the biggest innovation of his glasses is that they don't require tiny hinges and screws, and the temples are hinged to the frame. This also means that the temples and frames can be easily removed by the wearer and replaced with different colors and styles.
These American-made frames are actually made from aerospace grade Euathane plastics by a resin casting process, and the molds are made from 3D printed prototypes. Currently, the glasses come in six different styles and some different colors. Each pair of glasses weighs only 35 grams (including lenses), so they are comfortable and lightweight for wearing. In addition, SpeX glasses have passed a series of tests to ensure their durability and flexibility, such as throwing and being used for some physical activity.
As for lenses, SpeX has partnered with the Texas company EyeGlassPeople, which provides lens manufacturing services. What proponents have to do is send their glasses to EyeGlassPeople and select the lenses they want. The company will make lenses that fit the frame. In fact, the lens can also be replaced as long as the lens fits the frame.
It is understood that the production line of 3D printed frames is now ready. If the Kickstarter crowdfunding activity is successful, the startup will promote it to the market in the coming year. The goal of this crowdfunding campaign is to raise $5,100 by September 14, 2016, and supporters will have the opportunity to customize the frame at a lower price. Early bird supporters can get a pair of glasses (including lenses) for $90 (below the expected retail price of $20), and regular supporters can get a pair for $100. If you invest $425, the supporter will receive five different combinations of styles so they can change the look of the glasses regularly.
