The latest findings from European scientists show that skin tone and brilliance are important signs of skin aging , suggesting that cosmetic companies should pay attention to this aspect when launching products. The study revealed through the use of imaging procedures that it is interesting that wrinkles are not the only standard and sign of human age assessment, so the practice of traditional anti-aging products focused on reducing signs of visible wrinkles should be re-evaluated and changed.
Scientists at the University of Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Ethology in Austria and the Sociobiology/Anthropology department at the University of Goettingen in Germany say that facial skin color distribution (hue) can increase or decrease the age of women over 20 years of age. The study, funded by P&G Beauty, was presented at the Human Behavior and Evolution Society (HBES) annual meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, June 7-11. It uses 3-D imaging and morphing software techniques to remove wrinkles and bone structures in the equation to determine the true effect of facial skin color distribution on female age concepts, health and glamour. Scientists say the findings are currently in the audit acceptance phase of the journal Evolution and Human Behavior, which is expected to generate industry recognition for the research. Dr. Karl Grammer, founder and lead scientist at the University of Vienna, Ludwig-Boltzmann-Institute for Urban Etholog, and the main researcher, explains, “So far, behavioral scientists have rarely noticed the overall homogeneity of the skin and Color saturation. This study helps us better understand that wrinkles are not the only sign of a person's age. Skin tone and brightness are also the main signs of spouse choice, glamour and perceived age."
The study extracted digital photos of 169 Caucasian women between the ages of 10 and 70, using specialized morphing software to treat each person's facial skin on a standard bone structure, and specifically removed other potential Age characteristics such as facial wrinkles and lines. Upon completion of the treatment, it was found that those skins with the most uniform color tone achieved the highest glamour and health scores and were considered to be relatively young. Since cumulative UV damage such as freckles, natural aging, and skin vascularization can affect skin color distribution and brightness contrast, the study suggests that humans should instinctively recognize the various effects of these signs of aging.
